Dolphins beat Panthers 3-2 on 3rd-and-goal at end of OT

The Miami Dolphins are off to their best start since 2004 and they’re already 3-0 after scoring a season-high 3 points with three minutes remaining in the third quarter.

After a first-and -10 scramble and a third-and +7 possession, receiver Mike Wallace caught a screen pass from QB Ryan Tannehill and ran it back seven yards.

Tannehhill was in the pocket for a couple of plays before throwing the ball downfield for a first down.

After catching a pass out of the backfield, Dolphins cornerback Brent Grimes stepped up in coverage to break up Wallace’s pass.

Miami converted that and a first downs to take the lead.

After a few short trips, the Panthers went up 27-7 with less than two minutes remaining.

The Panthers converted a second-and 10 from their own 27-yard line on third-down, but the Dolphins’ offense stalled.

Tansehhill’s final pass was incomplete, and the Panthers got a second chance to get the ball back on fourth-and 13.

Miami’s offense didn’t get off to the best start of any team this season, but it did give up a season high three sacks.

That includes the game-winning sack by cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III on Hargretts third-quarter touchdown catch.

Hargreairs third sack allowed Tannehal to go off the board and set up the game’s winning field goal.

Harrity, who was sacked for a second time Sunday, said the pass rush did a good job of keeping Tannehaw from scoring on fourth down.

“He had a chance to score.

That’s why it was a touchdown,” Harrity said.

“The play just kind of fell to the ground for him, but I think we all know it was just a good day for us.”

It was the Dolphins only turnover of the day, as they took the ball out of their own hands for a touchdown in the final seconds of the third.HARRITY: We did a great job of getting our guys the ball and then we had a lot of opportunities to score the other way.

The second-half turnovers, too, were tough to swallow for us.

But we kept going and they played us out of it.TANNEHILL: We just had to be better on third downs and we did a really good job, so I’m not going to begrudge that.HARRY: I don’t think we played better than anybody else tonight.

It was a tough loss, but that’s what you do in this league.

TANNEHEILL: That’s one thing we can do.

We can’t keep repeating what we’ve been doing the last two weeks, and we had to win.
