A 5-day-old child died in New York City from COVI-19.
The child died Thursday after taking part in a vaccination program in the Bronx, a spokesman for the city Health Department said.
Officials believe the child had been in contact with a nurse at a local hospital, the spokesman said.
The infant was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where she died.
The department said it was unable to provide more information on the child’s condition.
The New York Times reported the child was a member of the group of kindergartners that had been inoculated with a vaccine called BPA-free, a version of the vaccine that contains low levels of the neurotoxin.
The program was a joint effort between the New York Public Health Department and the city’s Department of Education.
The state has more than 6 million kindergartens.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning about the possibility of a resurgence of the virus, with at least 17 cases reported in the United States so far this year.
